HeartRate Games is an early-stage technology startup dedicated to knitting together cardio fitness devices and video game consoles.

The company was founded by game networking experts whose last startup was RTime, now a division of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Team Bios

Don Ice - CEO
Don is a market development and channel development professional with a successful track record building revenues at companies including Apple, NEC, and Medtronic.

While at Apple, Don oversaw the global retail launch and marketing of the consumer service offering now branded MobileMe (www.me.com), developing sales and marketing strategies that helped grow this business beyond a $40 million run rate from scratch during its first year. Key to Don's success at Apple was his ability to overcome a sales and marketing culture that was resistant to promoting online consumer services, as well as his creation of an innovative segmented pricing program that was approved for permanent use by Steve Jobs and has been copied by other Apple Marketing teams.

Don enjoys tackling difficult market development challenges in the role of an outsider in markets with which he is unfamiliar. He is skilled at leading cross-functional sales and marketing teams consisting of up to several thousand employees.

Don has a B.S. Business Administration from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA.



Rolland Waters - Founder and Chief Architect
Rolland’s background emphasizes the development of sophisticated network architectures and APIs. After founding RTime, Rolland led the technology team that created network protocols and software for SIMNET, the early basis for Department of Defense military training networks. His work at RTime included development of technology used in the SCE-RT network gaming engine as well as network prototcols for basic distributed vehicle simulators, protocols for dynamic terrain in a distributed vehicle network, and APIs for both network and visual simulation systems.

While at Cray, Rolland developed software to enable the networking of high-performance supercomputers. At Microsoft, Rolland participated in development of in-game networking for the Forza Motorsports racing simulator for the Xbox 360. At Zipper Interactive, Rolland contributed to networked voice, AI, and the speech interface for SOCOM: Navy Seals.

Rolland has a B.S. Computer Science & Electrical Engineering and has completed work for his M.S. Computer Science, all at Washington University, St. Louis.


Johnny Fernandes - Developer
As lead engineer for RTIME, Inc., Johnny designed gaming components for dynamic motion prediction, 3- D graphics, and sound playback while also providing consultation services to game developers using the RTIME Networking Engine. At Sony, he designed and implemented core server technology and essential monitoring tools for Sony’s PlayStation 2 online game infrastructure. Johnny currently performs contract game development work for technology firms including Zipper Interactive and SCEA. In his spare time he is developing fitness gaming software technology for the iPhone.

Johnny has a B.S. Computer Science from Gonzaga University and an M.S. Computer Science from Western Washington University.


Technology Traction

HeartRate Games has developed its patent-pending fitness gaming programming interface for cardio fitness devices, and designed a bicycle video game controller. and created a working prototype of the controller. The controller enables users to pedal and steer their way through the TORCS open-source car racing simulator on a Windows PC. The prototype proves HeartRate Games' ability to cost-effectively transform new or existing sedentary games into fun, immersive, and cardio-intensive fitness games.

RTime History

Rolland Waters, founder of HeartRate Games, previously founded RTime, Inc., now a division of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

RTime's team led network development for SIMNET, a joint project by the Department of Defense and DARPA to build a simulated online battlespace for training purposes. RTime subsequently developed core components of the SCE-RT network engine for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 online gaming networks. SCE-RT provides a high performance, client/server and peer-to-peer networking solution for developers of PlayStation games involving large numbers of simultaneous online players.
